PE

Students must earn one (1) credit of Physical Education to meet graduation requirements. They can earn this credit by taking any of the P.E. classes or by successfully completing three (3) sport seasons sanctioned by the NM High School Activities Association and approved by the Public Education Department prior to their senior year. Students are limited toone (1) P.E. course per semester. Exceptions may be granted only with the approval of the principal. No student will be allowed more than two (2) P.E. classes per semester. Exceptions on meeting prerequisites can be made upon teacher approval.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION I -- 2305

Duration: All Year 1.0 credit

Requirement: Prerequisite to Inpidual Sports Class

Elective: Grades 9-11

Materials: Clothing pertinent to the activity

Content: The course is designed to help develop a student's physical, mental, and social state through a variety of physical activities that have been selected with a view to realizing these outcomes. In addition to this, videos, lectures, skills tests, and written tests are given. When both semesters are completed, the student has been involved in a well-rounded physical education program which includes team sports. Written and skills tests will be given.

INpIDUAL SPORTS -- 2312

Duration: All Year 1.0 credit

Elective: Grades 10, 11, or 12

Materials: Clothing pertinent to the activity

Content: This class is designed to engage students in a variety of physical activities that they can enjoy throughout their lifetime. This class would focus on a variety of inpidual and dual sports such as but not limited to: track, table tennis, archery, badminton, tennis, horseshoes, pickleball, flyfishing, hunter's safety, rapelling, golf, cycling, power-walking/ jogging. There will be adifferent curriculum offered each semester. As a result of completing this course, students will commit to physical activity as an important part of one's lifestyle. Written and skills tests will be given.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING I -- 2322

Duration: All Year 1.0 credit

Requirement: Prerequisite before taking Strength and Conditioning II

Elective: Grades 9, 10, 11 or 12

Materials: Clothing pertinent to the activity

Content: This course is designed to provide a comprehensive program for improving overall body strength and general conditioning of young men and women in a areas. Emphasis will be placed on the following:

1. Importance of improved flexibility both as an aid to performance and in the reduction of injuries.

2. Specifics of strength training from appropriate warm-up exercises to proper techniques for training on specific muscles or muscle groups to cooling down exercises.

3. Involve proper nutrition as one of life's most important health habits regarding diets for strength building, weight reduction, and weight control.

4. Skills test will be given.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING II -- 2314

Duration: All Year 1.0 credit

Elective: Grades 10, 11 or 12

Prerequisite: Strength and Conditioning I

Materials: Clothing pertinent to the activity

Content: This course provides a comprehensive program for improving overall body strength and general conditioning of young men and women in all areas of athletics.

This course is highly recommended for all athletes. Emphasis will be placed on the following:

1. Importance of improved flexibility both as an aid to performance and in the reduction of injuries.

2. Specifics of strength training, from appropriate warm-up exercises to proper techniques for training on specific muscles or muscle groups to cooling down exercises.

3. Involve proper nutrition as one of life's most important health habits regarding diets for strength building, weight reduction, weight control, and pre-game meals.

4. Development of some sports-specific skills.

5. Skills test will be given.

SWIMMING I (beginner to advanced beginner) - 2323

Duration: 1 semester 0.5 credit

Elective: Grades 9-12 Fee: $10/sem

Materials: Clothing pertinent, appropriate to swimming

Content: Develop proper technique in the front crawl (with proper breathing), elementary backstroke, back crawl, breast stroke. Learn basic drown-proofing, proper technique for treading water, ping, and underwater swimming. Practice basic rescue skills. Understand lifelong benefits of swimming - lap swimming for conditioning, water aerobics, etc.

SWIMMING II (Advanced Swimming/Lifesaving) - 2326

Duration: 1 semester 0.5 credit

Elective: Grades 9-12 Fee: $10/sem

Prerequisite: passing the beginner class AND swimming test by the instructor. (Age 15- see below)

Materials: Clothing pertinent, appropriate to swimming

Content: This course is physically very demanding! Review of basic strokes- front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke. Review treading water. Develop proper technique in sidestroke and butterfly. Learn a few racing skills: like starts and flip turns. Learn other skills like surface ping, retrieving objects from the deep end. This class could include CPR and First Aid. It would also have a lifeguard certification component. Understand lifelong benefits of swimming - lap swimming for conditioning, water aerobics, etc. Age requirement: If course is offered in the Fall semester, then student must be 15 by Dec. 1; if offered in the Spring semester, then student must be 15 by May 1.

P.E. - OTHER (AEROBICS) -- 2399

Duration: All Year 1.0 credit

Materials: Clothing pertinent to the activity

Elective: Grades 9, 10, 11 or 12

Content: This class is designed for the student wishing to improve his/her aerobic capacity through various means: Aerobic dance, rope jumping routines, line dancing, bicycling (indoors and outdoors), body sculpting, dynaband and light weights, walk-running, jogging, hydro-aerobics, and circuit training. In addition to building cardio-vascular endurance, the student will receive instruction in proper nutrition, and will develop positive habits of weight control and build self-esteem. Written and skills tests will be given.
